A man held by police following a suspected rape in Redcar has been released under investigation.

Inquiries continue on Wednesday more than 36 hours after the reported assault on Westmorland Road, on the Lakes Estate.

Four houses were cordoned off and crime scene investigators probed the scene, after witnesses said a woman was found on a grassed area on the road.

Two police vans and a crime scene investigation van remained on the road on Tuesday after the incident, which was said to have happened in the early hours of the morning.

Cleveland Police confirmed that a man had been questioned on suspicion of rape.

A force spokeswoman said: “The 23-year-old man was who was arrested on suspicion of rape has been released under investigation.”

Cleveland Police said on Tuesday it had launched extra patrols in the area and appreciate the co-operation of local residents as they continue to investigate.
