Bin collections have been cancelled in Middlesbrough after a spate of vandalism.

A number of collections have been delayed as bin crews were unable to access town centre alleyways, ahead of rounds scheduled for Thursday.

The streets affected were:

Haddon Street

Thistle Street

Maple Street

Wylam Street

Somerset Street

Falmouth Street

Middlesbrough Council says that residents are now being advised that refuse collectors will return as soon as they can.

Councillor Denise Rooney, the authority’s executive member for environment and commercial services, said: “This mindless vandalism is completely unacceptable, and every effort will be made to find those responsible.

“This has caused disruption for residents, and extra work for our hard working crews.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and I can assure residents that we will have things back to normal as soon as possible.”
