A man found unconscious near a pub in Stockton is “critical but stable”, police have said.

Officers have not yet been able to identify the man discovered in the town’s High Street close to the Clock Tower Pub on Saturday .

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident, police have confirmed.

Cleveland Police has issued a description of the injured man.

He is described as white, around 50 years old, of heavy build and 5’10” tall.

The man is said to have “very closely cropped balding grey hair”, a coloured long sleeved jumper, blue denim jeans and brown boots.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Officers have not yet been able to identify the man and we would like to hear from anyone who believes they can help.

“We would ask people to think about a family member or friend who has perhaps not returned home or been in contact – when this would have been expected.”

The man had been drinking in the Clock Tower pub before an alleged altercation at 7.15pm with another man.

The victim remains in James Cook University Hospital , in Middlesbrough.

999 calls were made to emergency services on Saturday night, reporting that a man had been injured.

Paramedics from the North-east Ambulance Service attended while scene of crime officers could be seen carrying out investigations.

Carer Adele Hardwick, 25, was at the bus stop over the road from The Clock Tower pub, when she witnessed what she describes as a one-punch attack .

The incident left the victim laid out, partly on the pavement and partly on the road, and he was eventually taken to the Major Trauma Centre at James Cook University Hospital.

The mum-of-one said: “I work as a carer and I was waiting at the bus stop with one of my clients.

“I saw a commotion over the road and one man was acting quite agitated.

“He punched a guy, who fell over and hit his head off the floor.

“The noise of that happening was awful.”

The area was cordoned off for investigations to take place.
