The boss of a cycle store urged thieves to join their Christmas Savings Club after a crook tried to make off with a valuable bike.

Staff at Skinnergate Cycles posted the CCTV footage of a man brazenly stealing a bike from their shop in Middlesbrough .

The thief was chased by two employees and dropped the bike before making off.

But the Cube junior cycle, which is worth £349, was left scratched and damaged.

Staff posted the video on the business’ Facebook page shortly after the attempted theft at the Corporation Road store on Tuesday afternoon.

And they jokingly wrote: “Why try stealing a bike from us like this guy today? You could just join our Christmas Savings Club then collect your bike in a more relaxed fashion without being apprehended by our staff.

“Reserve any bike today and collect it just before Christmas fully built and ready to ride. We’ll even help you put it in your car!”

Police have been made aware of the attempted theft and the footage was passed on.

Business owner Grant MacIver told Teesside Live: “These people will chance their arm at anything.

“We had two members of staff in – one was behind the counter and the other was in the workshop.

“You can’t see it on the footage but they were scrambling over each other like something out of a Laurel and Hardy sketch!

“But our guys are quick on their feet and it’s quite hard to run with a kids’ bike.

“They eventually started to catch up with him and he ditched the bike. So we recovered it but it’s been scratched so it’s a loss for us because it’s not perfect.”

He said the post was tongue-in-cheek but added that thefts cause major damage to independent businesses.

“We want to put the message out to these people that you are not stealing from some big shareholder-owned, corporate firm,” he said.

“That money is used to pay members of staff and that’s their livelihoods.”
