Poundland is coming to Cleveland Retail Park by the end of this month.

The discount store has confirmed it will open a branch at the Middlesbrough shopping park, off Skipper’s Lane, around October 27 – and it will sell kids’ and adults’ clothing from the retailer’s PEP&CO fashion brand.

Poundland has not yet confirmed which empty unit it will be taking.

Its former rivals, Poundworld and Bargain Buys, collapsed into administration in June, dealing a double blow to Cleveland Retail Park as both shops closed their doors.

Poundland has previously indicated it wants to take over 20 of Poundworld’s old shops.

The new store could create around 20 new jobs, but Poundland said it was still having conversations with landlords of the 20 new stores over high rents, in light of the “new reality” of retail on the high street.

The chain has also been offering Poundworld’s former staff guaranteed interviews.

“We’re trading strongly and stores with a PEP&CO fashion store are a hit with customers,” said Poundland’s UK & Ireland managing director Barry Williams said at the time.

“That’s why we’re keen to find larger sites that enable us to bring our widest ranges to more high streets across the country.

“However, we can only do this if landlords really change their expectations about the total cost of occupation to reflect the new realities of UK retail,” he added.

Poundland, which attracts seven million shoppers a week to its stores, claims it’s a “significant driver” of footfall to UK high streets and shopping locations.
