Just last year the beach at Robin Hood’s Bay was named one of the best in the world, and many Teessiders love a visit.

But the views health inspectors came across on a hygiene check at the picturesque village near Whitby were stomach-churning, and have landed a fish and chip shop in trouble.

The co-owners of Mariondale Fisheries on Albion Road, were fined in court after inspectors found disgusting conditions, unsafe food being sold, poor cleanliness and unsatisfactory food safety management.

Susan Jane Wilkinson Verrill and Kristopher Verrill, pleaded guilty to four charges relating to food hygiene offences at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on October 2 and expressed remorse for the state their shop was found in on June 6.

They were fined £600 each for the four offences, ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge and legal costs of £746, bringing the total amount to £1,406 each.

Scarborough Council’s environment and regulation manager Jonathan Bramley expressed his disappointment at the fine handed out in court.

He said: “This case demonstrated some very serious breaches of food hygiene legislation and we are therefore disappointed at the relatively low level of fines set by the magistrates.

“The filthy conditions that our officer found in the shop showed scant regard for cleanliness and the welfare of customers.

“Food businesses are responsible for ensuring that their premises are kept clean and maintained in good repair and condition to ensure that they produce food in a safe and hygienic manner and in a clean environment.”

He added: “We take food hygiene very seriously and we will not hesitate to take action against any food business that does not comply with the necessary legislation.”
