A woman is being questioned by police after a reports of an attempted ‘child abduction’ at a busy Christmas event.

It has been claimed that a woman tried to abduct four children as Middlesbrough’s Christmas lights were being switched on, in Centre Square.

The packed event attracted several thousand people for an evening of entertainment.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a report of an incident at the Middlesbrough light switch-on, on Thursday November 22.

“It was reported that an unknown woman approached a young boy and interacted with him. A family member intervened and the woman walked off.

“A 35-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and currently remains in custody.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”

The event, which saw big crowds gather from around 6pm on Thursday night around the town, featured a fair and a performance of the ‘Christmas Dream Machine’.

The performance was followed by a fireworks finale which officially marked the beginning of the town’s Christmas festivities.
